No Scottish heritage required. Many of our members have no Scottish ancestry at all. If you love music, community, or just want to try something completely unique — you belong here. We'll teach you the pipes from scratch.

Your Pipes Are Waiting

Have you ever heard the sound of bagpipes and felt a chill run down your spine? That could be you. The La Crosse & District Pipes & Drums welcomes complete beginners and experienced players alike. Our Band of 15 members has been welcoming new recruits since that first Oktoberfest parade in 1976 — and we have room for you.

We offer structured piping instruction for new players starting from scratch. Our experienced members are passionate teachers who believe that anyone can learn with patience and practice. We don't offer drum instruction, but drummers with playing experience are always welcome in our drum corps. If you're drawn to Scottish and Celtic music and want to be part of a tight-knit community group, we'd love to hear from you.

We play in the Campbell of Cawdor tartan. New members receive instruction, guidance on acquiring a practice chanter and eventually full pipes, and a warm welcome into the Band.

Your Path to the Pipes

How to Get Started

Learning the bagpipes is a journey — here's how it works with us.

1

Reach Out

Send us a note using the form at the top of this page, or email us at info@ldpd.net. We'll invite you to come watch a rehearsal and meet the Band.

2

Start on the Chanter

Every piper begins on the practice chanter — a small, quiet reed instrument that lets you learn the fingering and tunes before moving to the full pipes. No prior musical experience needed.

3

Join Rehearsals

We rehearse weekly. As your skills develop, you'll be integrated into Band rehearsals, learning the tunes, marching pace, and how to play together as a unit.

4

Take the Stage

When you're ready, you'll don the Campbell of Cawdor tartan and march with us. There's nothing quite like your first public performance — it's a moment you'll never forget.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to read music?

No! We'll teach you how to read music as part of your training — it's straightforward to pick up. Many players also develop a good ear along the way. We give you the full foundation either way.

How long until I can play with the full Band?

It varies by individual, but most dedicated beginners are ready to perform publicly within a year. There's no rush — the goal is to build solid skills and enjoy the process.

How much does it cost to join?

A practice chanter costs around $75–$100 and is the only initial investment. Full Highland bagpipes are acquired later as you progress. We can advise on reputable suppliers.

Can I join if I play drums, not pipes?

Yes — drum corps members are just as important as pipers, and we welcome snare drummers, tenor drummers, and bass drummers. One thing to note: our free instruction covers piping only, so drummers should already have some playing experience. Get in touch and we'll talk about where you'd fit.

When and where do you rehearse?

We rehearse weekly in the La Crosse area. Contact us for current rehearsal schedule and location details.

I already play — can I join at my current level?

Yes! Experienced pipers and drummers are very welcome. We'll assess where you are and integrate you appropriately. Many members joined with prior experience from other bands.
